Step Starts are ideal for people getting use to starting in individual slaloms or timed runs. You need to be going as fast as you can before you start that clock! These starts however are not very useful for Duel Slalom Starts.
For individual slalom, you start much further away from the wand (notice distance (A) compared to (B) in Duel Slalom). The point of this is to delay the starting of the clock as long as possible until you can build up speed (momentum) with your body. Start with your poles, just in front of the wand and stand well back from the wand as in (1). Then take a step forward with one of your legs (2) and as you do this kick the other leg back (3). As this is happening keep you upper body supported with your poles as you lean over the wand. Kick the other leg back (4) and power through with your hands, through the poles (5). Notice when you power through the pole in (5) the angle the poles are pushing back - this is to get maximum thrust as you accelerate out of the start gate. Here is Chris giving a demo.
