The skis are narrower in the middle than they are at the two ends (see picture A). By placing the ski on its edge (as in picture B) and pushing on the red spot with you feet you will create an arc (green line) for your ski to travel on (as shown in picture C). Depending on what angle you set your ski at in the turn, you will be able to push further on the red spot to get a tighter arc to travel on. In picture D the angle is quite shallow and it will take a long time for your skis to turn. In picture E the ski is on a very high angle and as a result pushing on the red spot will create a very tight arc for the ski to travel on.
This will generate a higher angle and create a tighter, snappier turn.
With the higher edge angle the ski will be able to go into even more of a reverse camber and the ski itself will become like a loaded spring. The added bonus with this is that if we get the edge right, the skis will start to act like a trampoline bed and ‘ping' you out of the turn to increase your speed.
On the picture below you can see the racer edging their skis in anticipation for the turn in frame 1 and then apply pressure in the next frames 2 and 3.
