Smooth Line
With a racing line it is important to make the curve as smooth as possible and to try and reduce the distance you have to ski on the way down on the course. Shorter course - faster time.
At the same time you also need to also smooth the turns as much as possible - so there are no sudden movements.
You can't simply go from one pole to the next following the blue line, because you would end up turning late for each gate and lose a lot of speed having to traverse to the next gate. See 2 left hand diagrams below - in particular the black line. The black line is what you would end up skiing if you try and aim at each gate. This loses you all your speed and will give you a poor time.
Instead you need smooth the turns out and get your skis to follow the green line and your upper-body to follow the orange line.
Racing Line
The design of the skis has changed over the last 20 year quite considerable and it means as racers we can now take a more direct line through the course. The left hand side shows a traditional line whilst the right shows a more modern and aggressive line. Please see the notes down the side to explain why it faster and more effective.
